In 2026, OpenAI is offering eligible students at participating U.S. colleges and universities four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus. Students need to verify their enrollment through SheerID and claim the offer by October 31, 2026.
However, this is a promotional student offer, not a permanent free version of ChatGPT Plus. After the promotional period, the subscription can renew at the regular monthly price unless you cancel it.
This guide explains who qualifies, how the offer works, how to claim it, what happens after four months, and what students outside the U.S. can do instead.
Is ChatGPT Plus Free for Students?
Yes, eligible U.S. college students can currently get ChatGPT Plus free for four monthly billing periods through OpenAI’s 2026 student offer.
The offer is available to current full-time and part-time students enrolled at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions. OpenAI uses SheerID to verify student enrollment.
The offer includes access to ChatGPT Plus features and ChatGPT Work.
It is important to understand that this does not mean ChatGPT Plus is permanently free for all students.
The promotion currently has a claim deadline of October 31, 2026.
What Is the 2026 ChatGPT Student Offer?
The 2026 student promotion gives eligible students:
- Four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus
- Access to ChatGPT Work and other Plus features
- Access to advanced ChatGPT capabilities available through the Plus plan
- The ability to use ChatGPT for studying, writing, research, projects and other academic tasks
OpenAI describes the promotion as an $80 value for eligible U.S. college students.
The exact features available with ChatGPT Plus can change over time as OpenAI updates ChatGPT.
Who Is Eligible for the Free ChatGPT Plus Offer?
The 2026 offer is available to:
- Current full-time college students
- Current part-time college students
- Graduate students
- Students enrolled at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions
Your school and enrollment status must be verified through SheerID. Depending on your institution, verification may use enrollment records, your school’s single sign-on system, or supporting documents.
Do You Need a School Email Address?
Not necessarily.
Your ChatGPT account does not have to use your college email address. However, you need to complete the student verification process through SheerID while signed in to the ChatGPT account where you want the promotion applied.
How to Get Free ChatGPT Plus as a Student
If you meet the eligibility requirements, the process is relatively simple.
Step 1: Open the Student Offer
Go to OpenAI’s official ChatGPT student offer page and select the option to claim the free offer.
Step 2: Sign In to ChatGPT
Sign in to the ChatGPT account where you want the student promotion applied.
Make sure you are using the correct account before completing the process.
Step 3: Verify Your Student Status
Follow the SheerID verification instructions.
You may be asked to provide information that confirms your current enrollment.
Step 4: Complete the Activation
After successful verification, return to the offer flow and complete the activation process.
If you are starting a new Plus subscription, OpenAI says you may need to provide a valid payment method. You will not be charged during the four free monthly billing periods.
How Long Is ChatGPT Plus Free for Students?
The current 2026 promotion provides four free monthly billing periods.
The four-month period begins when you claim the promotion.
This is different from saying that ChatGPT Plus is free for an entire academic year.
For example, if you successfully claim the offer in October 2026, your promotional period begins from your claim date and covers four monthly billing periods.
What Happens After the Four Free Months?
This is one of the most important things students should understand.
The promotion does not automatically make ChatGPT Plus permanently free.
According to OpenAI, after the four free monthly billing periods, the subscription renews at $20 per month unless you cancel.
Therefore, students who do not want to pay for Plus after the promotional period should check their subscription settings and cancel before the paid renewal.
Does Canceling End the Free Period Immediately?
OpenAI says that if you cancel during the promotional period, your Plus access continues through the end of the current monthly billing period.
However, any remaining promotional months are forfeited when the cancellation takes effect.
So, don’t cancel without first checking how the cancellation will affect your remaining promotional period.
Can Existing ChatGPT Plus Subscribers Get the Student Offer?
Potentially, yes.
OpenAI says existing monthly Plus subscribers who are billed directly by ChatGPT can claim the offer if they meet the student eligibility requirements.
However, subscriptions billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play are not supported while they remain store-billed.
If you already pay for ChatGPT Plus, check your billing arrangement before trying to claim the promotion.
Is the ChatGPT Student Offer Available in India?
This is particularly important for students searching from India.
The current 2026 four-month student offer is for eligible students at U.S. degree-granting institutions.
Therefore, simply being a college student in India does not make you eligible for this particular promotion.
Students in India can still use the regular free version of ChatGPT, subject to OpenAI’s current availability and usage limits.
Do not confuse the regular ChatGPT Free plan with the promotional ChatGPT Plus offer.
ChatGPT Free vs ChatGPT Plus for Students
Students may wonder whether they actually need Plus.
Here’s a simple comparison:
| Feature | ChatGPT Free | ChatGPT Plus |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT access | Yes | Yes |
| Cost | Free | Paid after promotion |
| Advanced features | Limited | More access |
| Higher usage limits | Lower | Higher |
| Student promotion | Not required | Four free months for eligible students |
| Best for | Casual learning | Frequent academic and project work |
For students who only ask occasional questions, the free plan may be sufficient.
Students who regularly use ChatGPT for research, writing, studying, coding or projects may find the additional Plus access more useful.
How Can Students Use ChatGPT for Studying?
ChatGPT can be useful for much more than answering questions.
Students can use it to:
1. Explain difficult topics
Ask ChatGPT to explain a complicated subject using simple language and examples.
For example:
Explain photosynthesis as if I am a 10-year-old student.
2. Create practice questions
You can provide your syllabus or notes and ask ChatGPT to create multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions or a practice test.
3. Summarize study material
Students can provide notes or other permitted study material and ask ChatGPT to organize the important points.
Always verify important information against your textbook, teacher’s instructions or reliable sources.
4. Improve writing
ChatGPT can help students identify grammar problems, improve clarity and suggest ways to structure an essay.
It should be used as a learning assistant rather than simply submitting AI-generated work as your own.
5. Learn coding
Students learning programming can use ChatGPT to explain code, identify errors and create practice exercises.
6. Prepare for interviews
Students approaching graduation can use ChatGPT to practice interview questions and receive feedback on their answers.
You can also explore AI-powered career tools such as AI resume builders if you are preparing for internships or jobs.
What If You Are Not Eligible for ChatGPT Plus Free?
You don’t necessarily need ChatGPT Plus to learn AI.
The regular ChatGPT Free plan can still be useful for students.
You can also explore other AI tools and free services depending on what you need.
For example, if your goal is writing, research, studying, coding or creating presentations, different AI tools may have different free plans and limits.
You can explore our AI Tools for Work guide to discover tools that may also be useful for students and professionals.
